On the Cutting Edge of Deckle

Who doesn’t love a good example of irony? You get to enjoy a harmless bit of sarcasm, have a little chuckle. Sometimes we’re going so fast that we miss them. However, this little gem caught my eye.

On the same day I read that Amazon’s electronic book sales had surpassed the sales of hardcover books, I happened to stumble on this footnote while searching for a book I wanted to purchase on said website: “This Book Is Bound with ‘Deckle Edge’ Paper.”

Setting yourself apart
And Amazon thought it important enough to further explain the term: “You may have noticed that some of our books are identified as ‘deckle edge’ in the title. Deckle edge books are bound with pages that are made to resemble handmade paper by applying a frayed texture to the edges. Deckle edge is an ornamental feature designed to set certain titles apart from books with machine-cut pages. See a larger image.”

9 Images, 3 Stories, 1 Solution

The concept for Mohawk Fine Papers’ latest promotion piece, which celebrates the launch of its Solutions line, is a story in and of itself – well, three stories actually.

MohawkCreated by designers Adam Brodsley and Eric Heiman, principals of the San Francisco firm Volume, the men were inspired by the Solutions name to go beyond the expected samples and printing techniques found in a paper promo.

“One aspect of this project was that Mohawk was combining three different lines of paper (Nekoosa, Feltweave and Solutions) into one line called Solutions. We asked ourselves, ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting if our project did the same thing? What if we told three different stories?’ Then we hit on the idea of using the same images to go with the three narratives — a short story, a play and a six-word memoir,” explained Brodsley.

The resulting tales unite the same nine unrelated stock photos in intriguing and even startling ways.

As a special offer for PaperSpecs members, please log in and select “Mill Promotions” to request your copy of the Solutions promotion.
